Charcoal Drawing Class

Laura used different medias and changed the weight in her lines to show form in her drawings. By doing this, she was able to accentuate certain areas of the image that she wanted to draw more attention to, and also show the different textures in her work.

This texture is created by Laura’s strokes and how heavily she layered the area. For example in the hair of the people or owl; the way Laura has the lines going in the same direction and the way she highlights and contours the individual hairs, makes it seem like the hair is soft and flowing.

The subtractive charcoal process creates a sense of light because you are taking out the dark areas and removing the dark based on where the light hits objects. I added darker values to create shadows which helped show how bright I was trying to make areas of my drawings.

Doing this charcoal drawing helped me see what Laura was looking for in an object and what she’s looking for to help her draw.

This studio experience has made me more aware of how light can change the way you see objects.
